How Figuring Out Your Purpose Can Begin to Improve Your Life and Make it More Meaningful

This inner realization will help you be your best self

The idea you must live with purpose is often mentioned in self-development literature. No doubt, you understand it’s important, but you might not know why. Here’s what makes finding meaning in your existence vital for happiness and how to go about doing so.

What it means to live with purpose

You can’t control your environment, but you can make sure you live in a way that aligns with your values and provides a sense you were put on the planet for a reason.

When you don’t have a purpose, you travel along with the tide of life, moving wherever it takes you indiscriminately. You’re like driftwood. There’s no way of knowing your destination or what your journey will bring.

As such, you can’t craft your life in a way that serves you and are at the mercy of your surroundings.

If you identify your purpose, it empowers you because you can take action to fashion your life the way you choose.

Why it’s important to live with purpose

People who haven’t found meaning in their lives often end up stuck in a rut. They dwell in their comfort zones because there’s no reason not to. Without a purpose, they have no clear aims.

They might, of course, have a vague idea they want to win the lottery or be successful in business. These goals, however, aren’t really satisfying.

Living with purpose isn’t about setting targets, although they might be involved. It’s about having a solid foundation of knowing who you are and what type of person you want to be.

Your purpose, for instance, may be to help others and strive to leave the world in a better state for future generations. Knowing this, you can make the most of all opportunities to fulfill your objective and train your mind to focus on it daily.

If you don’t understand your purpose, there’s a good chance you won’t live up to your potential or ever realize what you might have achieved if you had found the answer to the question “why am I here?”

How to find your purpose

It’s necessary to recognize your purpose is likely to evolve over time. It’s malleable like your brain. Experience and learning will shape what you consider meaningful and influence you.

To discover what your purpose is, note what you are passionate about, and consider your values. What’s important to you? Relationships? Nature? Art? Music?

Also, what makes you angry? Are you worried about wildlife and our impact on the planet, for instance? (This concerns many people, but perhaps you’re passionate about the subject)

Whatever has the power to ignite strong emotions in you might have something to do with your purpose.

Think about how people close to you describe you too. Your main character traits will help you find answers.

If you can’t see your purpose straight away, don’t worry. It will become clearer as you live your life and note how you react to events and what you gain satisfaction from on your journey. Just strive to be the type of person you find admirable and keep doing things to meet your aim.

Note your reason for living might have nothing to do with what you do for a living at the moment. Maybe it never will, but you can always bring your purpose into your everyday interactions, including work, and color your lifestyle with meaning.

Fulfilling your purpose will give you energy and increase happiness. Even when you meet challenges or struggle, your purpose will provide strength and courage to overcome difficulties.
