It seems like a million years ago, but my crush was as large as life. I was 12: He was 14, and lucky for me, the feeling was mutual. Each day I scoured the school playground, wide hallways where footsteps echoed, and the streets of my hometown for just a glimpse of the boy.

It’s natural to endure a crush in your youth and not unusual to experience one if you’re single at any age. But there’s a line between healthy interest, with a touch of preoccupation, and unhealthy fixation.

If you can’t stop thinking about someone, doubtless, your passion comes at a cost to your well-being. The rush of bitter-sweet hormones that flood your body and brain cascade into sleepless nights. They reduce your ability to focus on anything else.

Why you’re obsessed

If you’re obsessed with someone new, there’s a reason. Get to know them if you like them. Then you will discover whether they are the person you imagine. If you’re right, yippee! If not, your obsession will vanish.

When we don’t know someone well, we are free to speculate about their personality. We could have sound judgment. But, sometimes, our thoughts reflect what’s inside us and have little to do with anyone…
