Yesterday, a bird with indigo wings dipped headlong into the river. She swept the water with grace and beauty. Then, in a flash, she left.

Moments of joy and wonder appear before our eyes daily, and like the kingfisher in flight, they might happen so fast that we hardly recognize or digest them.

Mindfulness helps us grab those special minutes and seconds and absorb them. When we immerse ourselves in them, they leave an impression, causing feel-good brain chemicals to increase and improve life.

Each experience builds upon the other, and before we know it, there are multitudes of pleasurable memories to recall, and happy hormones flow like a river.

When I speak of mindfulness, I mean awareness. We carry out many actions on autopilot. For example, we clean our teeth, wash the car, and do regular activities without registering what we do.

We also trek through much of life without being switched on. Life happens to us rather than us creating it. So, we don’t steer our thoughts or forge intentions. When we let life wash over us this way, we bob along at the mercy of the tides.
