Mornings Remind Me Beginnings Are Opportunities to Unfurl

Will you embrace the day?

Beginnings are often special; the first light of day reminds me as she creeps across the bedroom boards and spreads her fingers along the pale walls. The morning is a fresh start. A blank slate. The chance to begin anew and practice getting right everything I worked on yesterday or wish to add to today.

Every new day brings experiences we can’t yet know or plan how we want to meet. Anything can happen. After all, occasionally, an event turns your life around, shifts you closer to your dreams, or provides insights to carry forward. Mostly though, we inch ahead, unraveling life lessons, albeit in seemingly insignificant ways that build into wisdom.

This morning the birds make the most of the cool start and forage in leaf piles or skim the air above the river surface for breakfast. A moorhen family potter along through the weed, now and then walking where the water is shallow. A trout swims in the same spot she’s occupied for weeks. She’s young and not yet ready to explore.

While the morning unfurls, I recall other beginnings; old relationships and travels, forks in the road, and chances taken in haste or planned with care.

Each opportunity puts a spring in your stride as you take that first tentative step into the unknown. Perhaps, like the morning, you knowingly enter a new phase of life, slowly shifting into it like the sun rounding the corner first thing. Or you may plow into an event, all cylinders firing, like a child plunging into the ocean with glee.

The delight of a fresh day, an opportunity, brings mental and physical energy to help you muster the courage to face it. Copernicus, my dog, trots into the morning rather than dashing as he sometimes does when excited. I feel the same. This morning is my chance to ease into daylight and enjoy nature’s wildness, opening to whatever it might bring.

We all encounter new beginnings, some big, others small. They are opportunities to change and grow and expand into who we can be or chances to retract and shrink rather than embrace the day.

Watching the jasmine show her bright petals and climb into new pastures, it is clear nature urges us to explore while the sun shines and wafts the sweet fragrance of our uniqueness into the morning too.
