Just a Thought for Poets Behind the Paywall Regarding Medium’s New Design

Please tell me I’m wrong

I note the sleek new design is attractive. I love the way it looks. But does it sound the death knell for poets behind the paywall? The problem I see is readers can view poems in their entirety (unless they are very long ones) by simply visiting a writer’s profile.

No need to click and have your view registered anymore. You might, of course, click via the homepage or somewhere else. But they automatically send you to a writer’s profile when you reply to a comment. And it’s tempting to read work there and then.

Good tactic, if it meant registered page views. Guess it doesn’t, though. How many people will actually click to read, when there’s no reason because the entire poem’s already on view?

Am I wrong? Maybe I’ve lost the plot? Let’s hope so. Otherwise there’s little point writing poetry behind the paywall unless it’s as long as an article.

10-minute poem anyone?
