The average Joe has to fit life lessons into their day somehow
It’s five o’clock, and the station heaves. Some trains aren’t running because of Covid app pings. People must stay at home if they’ve been anywhere near anyone with the coronavirus. Still, the steady hubbub of the everyday grind hums along the British train tracks.
A woman to the right of me stares at her mobile screen, texting with the fingers of one hand while clutching her luggage with the other. People gaze ahead, motionless, or hurry by.
The station smells like bubble gum and sweat, and only the caretakers, busy sweeping the platform or collecting trash, have a calm demeanor. Everyone else emits a must get there soon or wish I was at home vibe. No one wants to be here, and I wonder how a regular individual juggles personal growth with the demands of daily life.
We are all on some platform or the other between bouts of taking care of responsibilities. Even during downtime, there are things to do and metaphorical trains to catch. We must walk the dog, clean the car or take it to the garage. Mow the lawn, and pick the kids up from school. Make that phone call to someone we mean to ring. Go shopping…
