I heard a British comedian point out Americans often give lengthier descriptions of objects. In the UK, for instance, we say glasses, but you say eyeglasses? And horse riding here, is horseback riding over there? And pavements in the UK are sidewalks in the USA? You are clear about where to wear your glasses, sit on your horse, and walk.
