Goodbyes Aren’t Forever
Death doesn’t end love
You were a cloud once,
billowing in the blue.
Another time, you sang
from the throat of a songbird.
Notes hurtled into tall poppies
that swung in the breeze till
dusk dripped.
A hundred years before,
you glinted on a river,
shining as life’s reflection.
And a decade sooner, you
went in and out with the tide
as driftwood from a far-flung
island where macaws lit the trees.
When you left this time, I
remembered goodbyes
don’t last. You’ll breeze in as
a wise owl or fall as a leaf
to nourish the earth and
one day, our paths will cross
and joy will ring out like
bells to greet the dawn.
