Non-native predators, such as small Indian mongooses, pigs, and feral cats, reduced the population to thirty birds by 1952. Fortunately, the species breeds well in captivity and has been successfully re-introduced. By 2004, there were around eight hundred birds in the wild, as well as a thousand in wildfowl collections and zoos.
