We wear masks, even though we aren’t aware of them. We craft them — piece-by-piece — as we discover parts of our temperament we dislike or fear others will find objectionable.

To be liked and avoid exclusion, we hide the abhorrent features of our psyche from other people, but wind up forgetting they exist.
