Everybody wants to be happy, don’t they? Well, yes, and no. There are several good reasons you might evade potential joy yet not recognize your acts of sabotage. Even if you have a healthy respect for happiness personally, you probably know someone who fits the description of an individual who is scared to embrace it.

Unhappy caregivers

People who fear joy are often wired this way. Sometimes, one of their primary caregivers suffered from many issues and expressed unhappiness openly.

If this is true for you, making sure you are never entirely happy either can provide a sense of solidarity and help you identify with the qualities they displayed. In such a case, you would perceive your happiness as disloyalty.

Fear of loss

At other times, people afraid to welcome joy hide a deeper fear. They are scared to be happy in case they lose what brings them joy and contentment. Not enjoying happiness in the first place means they’ve nothing to dread.
