A Conversation with My Keyboard
While we wait for my muse
Writer’s block, or an overflow of ideas, can render your pen dry. For wordsmiths everywhere, the process of writing requires a calm mindset, even when your keyboard gets fusty because you refuse to tap her keys until the moment of genius arrives.
“Tap. Tap. Tap.”
She’s right to be impatient. I’ve sat here for a while, glancing out the window and given her little consideration.
“Hmm.” She draws my attention closer, typing QWERTY on the screen.
“QWERTY? Is that all you’ve got?” She shudders with indignation at my remark.
‘Cap’s lock’ is on, a sure sign she plans to shout if I can’t calm her.
“Soon,” I say. “Any moment now, I’ll have a job for you. We’ve got to wait for my muse, though. You know that, right?”
Silence…
“What is that? Passive aggression? Aren’t you talking to me anymore, Sweetie?”
She likes me to call her that. It placates her.
QWERTY disappears, and a flashing arrow, pointing at where I should place words, shows itself.
We’ve been through this many times. I sit before her, fingers poised, and search the screen for inspiration, using it like a crystal ball.
