After 14 years of working from home, I’ve encountered several bad habits. They destroy creativity, wellness, and productivity, but they are avoidable. You’re likely to face unhelpful habits when you work at home, too, even with the best intentions. Here’s my top 10 list of ruinous behaviors to avoid if you want to stay happy, healthy, and industrious while still enjoying your home-based job.
Keeping a chaotic workspace
Most people’s workstations are terrific when they start to work from home. All tools, from paperclips to hole punches, are close by, and they streamline their workstations. As a newbie home worker, you’ll glance lovingly at your tidy home office and feel smug.
It’s only later you’ll note clutter has mysteriously piled up and hidden your stapler when you need it and crumpled your notepaper. If you’re not careful, you’ll end up with less than office-like items in your workspace, like snack tins, seeds for your vegetable garden, and dead batteries and bulbs that haven’t made their way to the recycling.
